We do not know which is more powerful or poetic, this picture of the first Permission to Start Painting Workshop joyful participants or the masterpieces they are holding up. We feel extremely blessed that it was led by the extraordinarily talented instructor Heather Pasley, owner of the Heart Gallery in Burien, WA. Each veteran created “majestic mountains” in the midst of laughter, music, encouragement and artistic expression. The foundation has plans to do more of these workshops in 2021cultivating connection, community, and opportunities to thrive.
I attended a women’s creative painting class hosted by the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation.
The PTSDF is a wonderful organization providing hope, healing, and fellowship for veterans and first responders. I am one of the veterans who has benefited from the PTSDF programs and generosity of our community. I did well professionally; but suffered silently from years of PTSD, anxiety, depression, perfectionism, and suicide ideation. The Foundation has been a wonderful resource on my journey of healing.
Regarding the event, our fabulous, vibrant, sassy, and very funny instructor, Heather, masterfully guided us into finding our inner kid and quelling our inner critic! We had fun painting, making a mess (ok that might have been just me…lol), and enjoying fellowship.
Painting and Heather’s guidance helped to remind me of some important life lessons: to acknowledge and doubt, but don’t engage, my inner critic…stand up to my perfectionist diva…when I get stuck, change perspective…and don’t be afraid to ask for help (important to have a support system).
I had an absolute blast creating and making a mess…lol! The best part of the evening…a sense of pride at what we all created, together. Amazing the life lessons and opportunities painting and art provides us!
I can’t say thank you enough to the Foundation and those who support our veterans and first responders!!

I want to thank the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation for hosting a women's creative painting class. It was an evening that was well spent getting to know other military females through painting. I look forward to more events geared toward female veterans, active duty and first responders. The PTSD Foundation is a phenomenal organization that provides many resources to help in various aspects of the lives of veterans, active duty and first responders. Thank you so much! Great picture!! Such a fun and enjoyable night with you all!!
